Day 1-3 September 22-24, 2009

Brian’s younger brother (by 9 years), Johnny and his wife, Akiko, have been living in Japan since 1996. His work put him on assignment to Hong Kong for two years, but they kept their home in Japan—where Akiko’s mother, Yoshiko-san, is staying while Johnny and Akiko are in Hong Kong. The two-year assignment is almost up—but Johnny might take on another assignment to extend the stay. Johnny was in Japan on business so it coincided with our stay in Japan. It was Johnny and Akiko who suggested the trip—Cathay Pacific was having a really good deal—All Asia Pass—a 21-day ticket—you can do from 3 to 21 cities. Johnny and Akiko paid for the airfare and said, “Come visit us!” Of course, we jumped at the opportunity. We chose Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong for our 21-day itinerary (thanks Joni for all your help setting this up for us!!) Certainly isn’t enough time for any one of the destinations, but it will give us a really good Taste of the Orient—enough to savor—and come back again for more.

Well---the departure date was a triple whammy. September 22 was our oldest son's 23rd birthday; we left our house to start our 3-week sojourn in three Asia locations; and, a long-awaited release of Grace's favorite author occurred...which she "bravely" left at home...through much pouting.

We went out to dinner at our favorite sushi restaurant to celebrate Kyle's birthday.

Grueling trip. SFO to Hong Kong--was long...but the movies were purty cool and the food was good, too.

Grace watched Wolverine, The Proposal, Star Trek and Ghost of Girlfriends Past. Brian watched Angels & Demons, Night at the Museum Part 2, and tried to go to sleep.

Touched down in Hong Kong, logged on at work had breakfast, and just before boarding the plane from HK to Narita, Grace went and threw up. Had a horrible headache--probably too much movie watching.

From HK to Narita, Japan, Brian watched Star Trek and Wolverine, while Grace tried to nurse the headache by attempting to sleep. Usually Grace has no problems sleeping anywhere--but once she has a headache--then the pain keeps her awake.

Got to Johnny's (Brian's little brother who lives in Shibuya, Japan)around 4pm. GREAT little house. Went for a nice leisurely walk around the area and Johnny's mother-in-law, Yoshiko, made us a terrific meal.
