Yoshiko-san made us a terrific breakfast to start the day. Johnny’s wife, Akiko, who is still in Hong Kong, called and gave us some tips for the train/subway system. From our walk the previous night, Grace noticed and commented that there aren’t any street signs. Johnny said it was because there are no street names. !! This made things a bit nerve-wracking as we set off to the Imperial Palace. The subway system is both simple…and confusing—especially for first timers—with a language barrier. Luckily, Yoshiko-san walked us TO the train station.

It was a beautiful day…clear, hot, and humid. We walked around the perimeter of the Palace looking for the entrance gate. Even the outside perimeter is beautiful. Turns out, though, that the Palace is closed on Fridays and Mondays.

As we were walking around the perimeter, Grace went to the bathroom. She immediately came out. Brian immediately commented, “That was fast—what’s the matter?” Grace smirked and said, “The toilet has no seat…as in it’s one of those squatting-type.” She said that when she was last in Japan (1981), there were still these types of toilets around, but had thought that, by now, that nearly all would have been changed to the “western” type. Johnny had indicated that there are still those who live out in the rural areas and those who are older who would likely be in the opposite end of the spectrum of Grace—and not know how to use the western-type of toilet. Anyway—natcherly—Grace took a picture of it. Grace said even if she had known HOW to use it, her bad knees would not have allowed her to perform—the duty.

We went to get something to eat at a nice buffet across from the Palace with a nice view of a fountain. We headed back…got a wee bit lost, but managed to find Johnny’s place. Lots of walking! We kept telling ourselves that we’d be in great shape if we lived here and had to get around “hoofing it”.

Johnny got home from work and invited us to a barbeque at Café California for a gathering of his colleagues. What a terrific time with some wonderful people.
